What the invoice must contain

Requirements differ in detail between countries, but the core of a commercial or tax invoice is consistent: seller and buyer identity, a sequential number, an issue date, line descriptions, and amounts before and after tax.

Bahrain VAT is 10%, and the dinar is a three-decimal currency, not two.

  • Seller name and VAT account number
  • A sequential, non-repeating invoice number
  • Issue date
  • Line descriptions, quantities and prices
  • Amount before tax, tax amount, and total including tax

Country notes

Watch the decimals: the dinar divides into 1000 fils, and any tool that treats it as two-decimal will produce rounding differences.

The rate changed from 5% to 10%

Bahrain raised VAT from 5% to 10% with effect from 1 January 2022, after three years at 5%. Plenty of templates and spreadsheets still circulating online compute the old rate.

If you are working from a spreadsheet or a copied template, check the rate before anything else: an invoice charging 5% today collects half the VAT due, and the shortfall is yours to make up, not your customer’s.

The third decimal — the most common Bahraini invoice error

The Bahraini dinar divides into 1000 fils, so it carries three decimal places. Most off-the-shelf invoicing tools assume two, because they were built for dollars or riyals.

The damage shows up in aggregate rather than on a single line: rounding to two decimals shifts every amount by up to 5 fils, so the invoice total stops matching the sum of its own lines — exactly the kind of discrepancy that stalls a review. This tool computes and prints three decimals automatically when Bahrain is selected.

Frequently asked questions

Is Arabic fully supported?

Yes. The interface is Arabic-first with a native RTL layout, and the PDF preserves correct Arabic letter shaping.

Can I change the currency and its decimals?

The currency follows the selected country, including the three-decimal Gulf currencies (KWD, BHD, OMR).

What is the VAT rate in Bahrain?

10% since 1 January 2022, having been 5% from the start of VAT in January 2019. Many templates in circulation still compute 5%.

When must I register for VAT?

Registration follows annual supplies: the mandatory threshold is BHD 37,500 and the voluntary threshold BHD 18,750. Confirm the current figure with the National Bureau for Revenue before registering.

Does the invoice have to be in Arabic?

Arabic is the operative language, with English permitted alongside it. Turn on the bilingual switch to print both labels in the same field, Arabic first.
